Type: a report on leaked footage and developer remarks attributed to a pre-announcement developer diary.

A developer diary surfaced before the official reveal

On May 21, 2026, Gematsu and GameSpot reported on what appeared to be an RGG Studio developer-diary video posted to a Bilibili user account.

The video was not released through an official SEGA channel or the Virtua Fighter official portal.

This article therefore treats the characters and remarks as information reported from leaked footage, not as an official announcement.

Characters and a title visible in the footage

GameSpot said the footage showed four characters demonstrating new and returning techniques.

Alongside the previously revealed Wolf and Stella, it showed a new male fighter and what appeared to be an older Pai Chan.

The male fighter appeared to mix Southeast Asian martial arts, and the name Cielo briefly appeared on a matchup screen.

The title Virtua Fighter Crossroads also appeared in part of the video, according to the report.

SEGA had not officially announced that title on May 21, so it must be described as a name visible in leaked material at that point in time.

Combat and presentation reported from the 90-second clip

Push Square described more than 90 seconds of gameplay featuring several characters, including Stella, Wolf and a fighter who appeared to be Pai.

GameSpot said the hard strikes, kicks and grapples retained the martial-arts realism associated with Virtua Fighter.

It also found the presentation more flamboyant than earlier entries and compared some of its visual style to Street Fighter 6.

Push Square highlighted fluid animation in the low-resolution copy and close camera work on finishing blows.

Interview cutaways with producer Riichiro Yamada and other RGG Studio staff suggested that the footage came from a longer behind-the-scenes presentation.

These were contemporary impressions of compressed leaked footage, not verification of final graphics or performance.

The reported direction for versus play

According to remarks translated by Gematsu, VS Mode would contain options intended to make fighting-game players feel at ease.

Although the project placed major emphasis on narrative, the developers had also created a mode that allowed players to enter a one-on-one match immediately after booting the game.

One developer contrasted Virtua Fighter’s reputation for complexity with an initial impression of a game that required no difficult commands and could be enjoyed through punch, kick and guard.

The team wanted to preserve that intuitive three-button accessibility while polishing every element and reconsidering the game from the ground up.

Reconsidering realism in the guard system

The team said it began by asking what would happen if it pursued realism first.

Using earlier guard systems as an example, it questioned whether a real martial-arts expert would defend in the same fixed way shown in the games.

Because a fighter would react differently depending on the incoming punch, the team first tried to express those realistic reactions and then considered the gameplay they could produce.

This was a description of design direction, not a confirmation of final inputs, frame data or a finished defensive mechanic.

Another developer said the large move list and potential complexity required a new level of depth.

Ease of entry and depth might sound contradictory, but the developer argued that they could—and had to—coexist.

What the leak did not confirm

The footage could not confirm the final roster, mode structure, control scheme or platforms for the released game.

The original creation date and upload path of the video were also not officially verified.

Cielo’s nationality and fighting style, and any relationship between Stella and existing characters, were not confirmed at the time.

Information later confirmed by SEGA should be recorded in a separate follow-up archive instead of being presented as known fact on May 21.

Contemporary user reactions

The public Reddit thread included excitement about the animation and Pai Chan alongside concerns about defensive options and whether Cielo might replace an established fighter.

“The animation and timing is on a level we have never ever seen.”

“Pai is looking so cool. Loving all the character designs and the moves all look so fluid.”

“Ok it looks amazing but I’m just wondering where’s all the parries and evasion?”

“My only concern is Cielo is kinda doing Vanessa things. I’d be pretty salty if she got replaced by him.”

These are individual comments from the thread, not a consensus attributed to the entire community.
