Type: a summary of SEGA’s official announcement, the Game Awards 2024 world-premiere teaser, and VF Direct 2024 scheduled the same day.
On December 13, 2024, SEGA officially announced that 『New VIRTUA FIGHTER』 Project — an all-new Virtua Fighter title — had begun, revealed at The Game Awards 2024.
The reveal took place at The Game Awards 2024 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The same day, SEGA’s Japanese topic page, a SEGA of America press release, and the official teaser trailer were published.
An all-new entry from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio
SEGA’s Japanese announcement framed the project as a completely new Virtua Fighter series title under the name 『New VIRTUA FIGHTER』 Project.
The official World Premiere trailer description and the SEGA of America press release both state that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is developing it.
The press release also noted that Project Century was revealed at the same show, and that both projects come from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
SEGA Corporation President and COO Shuji Utsumi spoke about bringing back IP fans had been asking for, naming Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds alongside a completely new Virtua Fighter project.
The announcement presented the project as a separate all-new line from Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O.
What the world-premiere teaser shows
The official teaser is a short World Premiere clip of roughly one minute.
It shows an older-looking Akira Yuki, a new figure, and early battle footage still in development.
The trailer description stresses an all-new series title from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and points viewers to the project site and Discord.
From the materials available on announcement day alone, character names, relationships and the final combat system cannot be confirmed.
VF Direct 2024 on the same day
SEGA’s Japanese announcement said Virtua Fighter Direct 2024, a 30th-anniversary stream, would begin on YouTube at 14:00 Japan time on December 13.
The stream was billed as delivering the latest series information; the SEGA of America release described it as covering both Legacy VIRTUA FIGHTER Project and New VIRTUA FIGHTER Project.
Developer remarks that followed the reveal in more detail are covered separately in the Famitsu interview archive.
