Type: a roundup of real r/virtuafighter Reddit comments after the official combat first look. This is not a confirmed system explanation.
After the August 4, 2025 combat gameplay first look dropped, r/virtuafighter filled with frame-by-frame comments on guard, hits, presentation and character identity.
The official video and SEGA’s announcement are covered separately (related article).
What follows quotes and summarizes comments that were actually posted in that thread.
Individual takes are not presented as a community consensus.
Praise for a “clean” look and the training stage
One user wrote “This game looks so CLEANNN!” and said that if this is the training stage, it was easily the best-looking one so far.
Another went further: “hands down the best a fighting game has ever looked.”
A comment praised “pure hands, no particle effects, no fluff.”
Someone read the lack of music and stage explosions as SEGA having “nothing to hide.”
Slow motion, blood and a realistic KO were welcomed as “Beautiful yet gritty.”

Theories about body damage, stun and dynamic blocks
One of the highest-voted comments treated the red glow as a “damaged” state that could lead to a guaranteed crumple on the next hit.
Another read the glow on the “not sara” character as a special stun or injury mechanic, and guessed the game might lean away from big air juggles.
A user said targeted damage and dynamic blocks were the real highlight — and joked they might not even need a health meter.
Others celebrated “almost zero juggling.”
Slow motion, head injury and a KO screen were welcomed alongside the apparent absence of explosion effects or “anime” supers.
Familiar Akira tools such as 66P+K and neutral P+K were spotted as well.
Some framed targeted damage, conditional bonuses and multiple stagger states as a likely core system.
Caution, editing doubts and marketing complaints
Others argued it was premature to infer brand-new mechanics from the trailer alone.
One user treated the Stella head-injury beat as a possible stick-waggle stun replacement, and the KO as close to VF4-era repeating knockouts.
Akira’s quick recovery followed by what looked like a whiff was also guessed to be editing.
A longer comment called the marketing anti-climactic while still praising combat that aimed at realism.
Hit-smoke and a “weird crack” on Stella’s face drew requests for an effects toggle.
Missing health bars and a timer were rejected by one user as “vibes based combat.”
Someone asked where the dynamic blocking from the concept trailer had gone.
Another was disappointed by a disconnect between the concept trailer’s dodge/counter emphasis and this first look.
Confusion with the CES concept clip
One comment asked whether this was “the VF6 we saw last time” with choreographed fights.
Another reminded the thread that the NVIDIA CES teaser literally said “Not actual gameplay.”
Users also argued both sides of whether earlier “too good” fights were still real gameplay.
Sarah or Stella?
VGC identified the opponent as Sarah Bryant, but community posts often said Sarah/Stella together.
One commenter wrote “Goddamn Sarah/Stella looks so gorgeous.”
Another worried about younger replacements and hoped “it really is Sarah after all.”
Someone asked outright, “When did Sarah turn into Stella?”
A fan said their main was already there but still wondered what happened to Sarah.
The official first-look portal text alone did not settle the name.
Appetite for change — and for restraint
One comment argued VF needed this presentation style to stand out after meters and supers flooded other 3D fighters.
Another recalled “THIS IS NOT VF!” reactions to Wolf, while still wanting core gameplay kept and something new added.
A casual Tekken player hoped art direction and a real story mode could broaden the audience — and that DLC would stay light.
A reply defended visible status effects as a way to communicate special states mid-match without on-screen messages.
Keep period speculation separate from later confirms
These reactions came before TGS system names were officially introduced in September.
Contemporary guesses about dynamic blocks, body damage and stun states should not be read as locked specs.
Later developer materials explain the combat direction in more concrete terms (related article).
